medical weight loss programNo one ever said losing weight would be easy. Everyone’s body is unique, and there are a lot of different factors that go into losing weight and keeping it off. However, in the fitness world, few questions are as hotly disputed as this one:

To burn fat is it better to use light weights with high reps or heavy weights with low reps?

The answer, unfortunately, isn’t so simple. The truth is that you need to practice both exercise methods to achieve the best weight loss results. A combination of strength training and metabolic conditioning is the most effective way to burn fat and build muscle.

Let’s look at the facts:

  • Light weights and high repetitions alone do not tone muscle or burn fat, but high-intensity interval training (HIIT) does contribute to fat loss. Many people make the mistake of lifting light weights with high reps to lose fat. However, lifting weights (especially lighter ones) alone does not stimulate muscles enough to cause fat loss. To lose fat, you do need to use light weights and high reps, but not in the sense of weightlifting. Rather, you need to perform full-body exercises in a circuit with short intervals.
  • Lifting heavy weights build strength, which allows you to maintain muscle while you lose fat. Lifting heavy weights alone will not do much to help you lose weight. What it will do is give you the strength you need to maintain muscle mass. That way, as you lose fat tissue through HIIT your body becomes more toned. Ultimately, resistance training (lifting heavy weights) convinces your body to hold onto that muscle tissue, otherwise you could lose muscle along with the fat.

When it comes to overall weight loss, nutrition has a greater impact than exercise. However, performing the right exercises will help you shed more fat and maintain more muscle. At the end of the day, the goal should not be to just lose weight. The goal should be to improve your overall health and fitness.
