weight loss clinicsWith our busy schedules and leisurely lifestyles, it can be difficult to stay motivated to get up and get active. Less than five percent of adults actually participate in 30 minutes of physical activity each day, and only one-third receive the recommended amount of exercise each week.

The truth is you don’t have to belong to a gym to get in your 30 minutes a day. Simply walking more can help you stay on the path to your fitness goals. Here are a few ways to make walking a daily habit.

  1. Walk and talk
How many phone calls do you make or take each day? Whether they’re personal calls or work calls, if they’re on a mobile phone, why not mobilize? Make a habit out of walking when you’re on the phone. You can go outside and go for a stroll around the block or just take a few laps around your living room. You wouldn’t believe how quickly the steps add up when you’re lost in conversation.
  2. Don’t surf, stroll
Whenever you find yourself aimlessly wandering from page to page on the Internet, stop and go for a walk instead. Not only will this get you moving more, but it will leave you feeling far more refreshed and focused when you return to your desk.
  3. Hit the mall
With the holidays coming up, you probably need to do some serious shopping anyway. Why not kill two birds with one stone? Meet up with some friends and spend the day walking, talking, and shopping. Don’t just stop and head home once you’ve made all your purchases. Take a few more laps around the mall. The extra weight from those bags will help strengthen your arms as well.
  4. Start an audiobook or a podcast
Pick up an audiobook or subscribe to a podcast, but only listen when you’re walking. This will motivate you to get your butt off the couch and keep you distracted and entertained while you’re getting your steps in.

For some people with loftier health and fitness goals, simply walking isn’t enough.
