A person is considered obese if she weighs at least 20% more than what is considered a normal weight for her height. There is a long list of medical problems that often accompany obesity. Here are a few of the most common ones.

  1. Heart Disease
    Being overweight makes you more likely to develop high blood pressure and cholesterol. These both can lead to heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Heart disease includes a number of separate conditions that affect the structures and/or function of the heart. These include heart failure, coronary artery disease, heart attack, arrhythmias, cardiomyopathy, pericardial disease, vascular disease, and more. Doctors say that losing between five and 10% of your weight is proven to lower your chance of developing heart disease.
  2. Stroke
    Stroke is caused by bleeding in the brain or a blocked blood vessel. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. and is the number one cause of disability and the number two cause of dementia. Recovery depends on the extent and location of the resulting brain damage. The truth is, about 25% of patients die within the first year of having their first stroke.
  3. Type 2 Diabetes
    Type 2 diabetes hinders a person’s body from using insulin to turn glucose into energy. This is called insulin resistance and it is either caused by genetics or obesity. Basically, the pancreas, which produces insulin, is not able to move the glucose into the cells and the sugar then builds up in the blood instead.
